General Disclaimer

Brown's Tactical Armory (BTA) provides this page as a courtesy to help customers understand general firearms laws that may apply to purchases, transfers, gunsmithing, and custom builds. This is general information only, may not reflect the most current legal developments, and does not apply to every individual situation. Always consult official sources or an attorney for guidance specific to your circumstances.

Arizona at a Glance

  • Arizona is generally considered a "constitutional carry" state, meaning most adults 21 and older who can legally possess a firearm may carry openly or concealed without a permit, subject to certain location restrictions.
  • Arizona does not require a state permit to purchase most firearms, though federal requirements (such as Form 4473 and NICS background checks) still apply through a licensed dealer.
  • Arizona has a voluntary Concealed Weapons Permit (CCW) program, which may provide reciprocity benefits in other states and can qualify for discounts on certain FFL transfer fees.

Federal Firearm Transfer Basics

When purchasing a firearm through a licensed dealer (including via an FFL transfer from an out-of-state or online seller), federal law generally requires:

  • Completion of ATF Form 4473.
  • A NICS background check conducted by the receiving FFL.
  • Valid government-issued photo identification.
  • Compliance with any applicable waiting periods (Arizona currently has no state-imposed waiting period, but federal processing times may apply).

Who Cannot Legally Possess a Firearm

Federal law prohibits firearm possession by certain individuals, including (but not limited to) those convicted of a felony, subject to certain domestic violence protective orders, convicted of certain domestic violence misdemeanors, unlawful users of controlled substances, and certain other categories defined under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g). This list is not exhaustive — consult the ATF or an attorney for complete information.

NFA Items (Suppressors, SBRs, etc.)

Items regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA), such as suppressors and short-barreled rifles, require additional federal licensing (an SOT for dealers/manufacturers) and a separate tax stamp application and approval process for the end purchaser. BTA does not currently offer NFA item sales or transfers. If this changes, this page will be updated with current process information.

Gunsmithing & Custom Builds

Generally, a licensed gunsmith may perform repairs, modifications, and custom builds on customer-owned firearms. Certain modifications (such as those affecting barrel length, overall configuration, or converting a firearm to a regulated category) may trigger additional federal or state requirements. BTA will advise customers if a specific request requires additional paperwork, licensing, or falls outside what can legally be performed.

Traveling With Firearms

Firearms laws vary significantly by state. If you are transporting a firearm across state lines, you are responsible for understanding and complying with the laws of every state and jurisdiction you will pass through, including federal protections such as the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA) safe passage provisions, which have specific requirements for compliance.
